Hex UI is a web browser based interactive audio-visual application
exploring themes of encryption, surveillance, networks and the secret societies. The project was
built using Flash’s HTML5 support while audio is generated using web-pd, a javascript library,
allowing for the integration of Pure Data in the browser. The sound design was inspired by
the drones, sine waves and bursts of noise used by electronic composers such as Ryoji Ikeda and Alva
Noto, as well as the enigma of the UVB-76 buzzer. The core audio materials are built from stochastic
processes, while select parameters can be manipulated through the use of the sliders positioned
around the sides of the canvas. The beauty of using Pure Data is that through the use of generative
audio, file size is kept to a minimum, not requiring collections of large audio files.
